Those who take "statin" drugs
such as pravastatin or
simvastatin to reduce blood cho-
lesterol might help themselves
even more by consuming omega-
3 fatty acids from fish or pills•
This finding comes from a recent
clinical trial involving about
19,000 people with elevated cho-
lesterol levels. Half the group re-
ceived only a statin while the
other half also took a supplement
containing an omega-3 found iri
fish oil. After four and one-half
years, the addition of the omega-
3 supplements reduced the risk
of non-fatal heart attacks and
other coronary events by 19%
compared with the statin alone.
This supports the American
Heart Association's recommenda-
tion that heart patients take a
statin and about one daily gram
of omega-3s from fish or fish-oil
supplements.
