i 8B The Mountain Messenger, Thursday, December 13, 1990 Blue Sulphur Springs Homemakers Discuss The Appalachian Woman Mrs John McCurdy presented a program at the November meeting of the Blue Sulphur Ex- tension Homemakers Club. ~Fhe Pride in Being an Appalachian Woman." Some of the material she used was taken from the "Foxfire" books and from "Yesterday's People." People of Appalachia first at- tracted national attention during the Civil War period, To a great extent they were romanticized as primitive, but noble in spirit. They had large families as a rule, but lived in small houses. A let. ter written by a Kentucky woman in the late 1800s tie- scribing her childhood, revealed what life was like in the early days of this region. Mrs McCurdy displayed nlany handmade items passed down through her mother's family, who originally came from North- ern Virginia. One item of excep- tional quality was a handloomed coverlet which had belonged to her 4th great-grandmother. Mrs Thornton England, vice president, presided during the business meeting. Devotions were led by Mrs Virgil McCutcheon. Mrs James E. Johnson made a cake for the Rowan Home birthday party No- vember 20. Plans were made lbr the Club Christmas meeting and lunch- eon to be held December 1"2 at noon at tile Pence Springs Hotel. All members are encouraged to lake a guest to this meeting. The January meeting will be held at the Big Wheel Restaurant m Alderson, with Helen England as hostess. Elizabeth Bryan! will be program leader. Hostess for this meeting was Mrs William Taylor who lives in the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church parsonage. She served desert and coffee to the 12 mem- bers who attended. Xi Gamma Delta Holds Meeting The November 27 meeting of Xl Gamma Delta Sorority was held in the home of Juanita Di- neen. Shelby Arnold reported on the successful birthday party held at a local nursing home where gifts were presented to five birthday honorees. Music was presented by the Gospel Road Singers. Members were reminded to turn in gifts to be used as bingo pries to Shelby Arnold by the next meeting. Norma Brockway was voted in as Valentine Queen for 1991. She will receive her crown at fes- tivities in February. The date lor the Christmas Tree Hop will be set at the next meeting on December 14. Refreshments were served to: Sharon Dudley.
