Unfortunately, Lucy's decision enraged her noble finance. He proceeded to make false accusa- iution where she miraculously remained unharmed. The next decree was to bum her to death, but the flames had no effect. Legends state that her eyes were then extracted by the judge or torn out to present to her suitor. Finally a guard was ordered to draw his sword and cut her throat. Saint Lucy died at the age of 20 in the year 304. She is the patron saintof eyes, patroness of Syracuse and as well as a saint invoked by the laboring poor. She is remembered on her feast day, December 13.
