West Virginia is blessed with
thousands of acres of public
land to hunt on and when you
consider tile land owned by
Westvaco which can be hunted
on by permit, you have a lot of
places to choose from.
Here are a few you might
want to check out: Edwards Run
ts located in Hampshire County
in the Eastern Panhandle. The
400 acres was originally pur-
chased for its potential as a
trout hatchery because of the
htgh water quality in the Ed-
wards Run Spring. In 1966. the
area was assigned a resident
wildlife manager to improve the
hunting and fishing.
There is excellent deer hunt-
ing available as well as turkeys,
grouse and squirrels. Rabbit
htmting is also good in the area.
Primitive camping sites are avail-
able near the lake. There is a fly
fishing only stream and a two-
acre pond which has trout,
largemouth bass, smalhnouth
bass and channel cats.
Also located tn Hampshire
County is the Nathaniel Moun-
tain Public Hunting and Fishing
Area. There are good populations
of turkey and deer. The squirt'el
hunting is predicted to improve.
If you like to fish for native trout,
you can fish Mill Run.
The nearby South Branch of
the Potomac River offers great
smalhnouth fishing. The camp-
ing in the area is primitive to
preserve the wilderness-like-at-
mosphere.
The Teter Creek Public Area is
located in Barbour County. This
scenic area lies in the Alleghany
Plateau and has an average ele-
vation of 1,000 feet. The area
has 136 acres in which to roaJn.
