routs Red Devils 33-6 a difference 18 in make. long it took the Spartans to turn a I game into a rout and the state's or, ly high school team. put points on a hurry? Can we talk? [o go in the half Johnson rambled the middle for six, play Spartan drive. It conversion gave the lead After the Red the ensuing the ball over to the quarterback Bimbo Richmond with a 33 pass with no time the clock. Lightning. had picked up 14 the time it takes to turned the game good, eventually away with a 33-6 East struck first, quarter on a 25 yard run by David Johnson coming immediately after an interception by Jeff Hughes turned the ball over to them. Oak Hill countered with a 14 play, 69 yard drive late in the quarter, capped by quarterback Yon Woodson's one yard plunge for six and a tie ballgame. Then came the demoralizing turn of events for Oak Hill. The Red Devils never fully recovered from that disastrous 18 seconds, or from the leg cramps suffered in the second half by Woodson, and managed only 44 yards offense in the second half. Although the Spartans picked up 13 points worth of gravy in the second half, it was their defense that really dominated the ballgame. Lee Bragg, Eamon Given, John Spence, Joey Mollish, Todd Wiley and company controlled the line of scrimmiage, snuffing the Devil's running game and harassing Woodson whenever he tried to pass. The Spartans' second half touchdowns came on a pair of runs by Ben Withrow and David Johnson of 16 and 10 yards, respectively. Greenbrier East churned out 246 yards on the ground for the evening. The Spartans also picked up 134 yards through the air, as Bimbo Coies had a better passing night than his 5 for 16 numbers would indicate. The win raises the Spartans record to 7-2. They'll have to win next week at home against Elkins and then hope that some of their defeated opponnents provide them with enough bonus points to propel them into the top 8 of the Secondary School Activities Commission rankings. A ranking of 8 or better will get the Spartans into the State Championship playoffs. They went into Friday's game rated the 11th best AAA team in the State.
