6A The Mountain Messenger, Thursday, October 25, 1990 District Governor Speaks to Ronceverte Lions Club ames Lion District Governor Sam D. Dorado spoke to the Roncev- erie Lions Club at its regular dinner meeting Thursday, Octo- ber 18, at the /Mnerlcan Legion building. Lion District Governor Dorado from tire Mt. Hope club was making his official visit to tire Ronceverte club. He compli- mented the Ronceverte club on being a "busy" club and re- marked about some of its achievements. He was aware of the considerable amount of money the club spends pro'iding glasses for the local lndlge A and its large contribution to the Lions Club International Foun- dation which finances research and assistance to the blind the world over. He was aware of the several other projects of the club and knew that much of these moneys were derived from sales at the Ronceverte Lions Club booth at the State Fair. Lton James Brooks, 1st Vice President, presided in the ab- sence of Lion president, Mike Gabbert. Lion Dorado said there are 39,698 Lions Clubs in 171 na- tions with a total membership of over 1,400.000. Russia is the last nation, to date, to have its first Lions Club and that club was sponsored by a Korean club. He said that the number of clubs and memberships have been declining in the United States and Canada in recent years but have been greatly in- creasing In other parts of the world. This may be due, he thought, to the great need of pre- vention and treatment of blind- ness in so many places. It Is esti- mated that there are 40 million blind in the world and 80% of this blindness could have been prevented. Lion Dorado discussed his experience at the seeing eye school for dogs. He was blind folded and led around by one of the trained dogs. It costs about ten thousand dollars to train a dog but an indigent blind person who can walk with a cane may have one free. Lion Brooks reported that the "Btg Bucks" bingo games held In the West Virginia building on the State Fair grounds, October 14, was a success. This undesig- nated money will be used for sight conservation and other charitable projects of the club. The money derived from the bingo games at the American Legion building each Friday eve- ning is used to defer the mort- gage on the American Legion building which the Ronceverte Lions bought from the American Legion. Lion "lYeasurer, Donald Massey, reported that the build- lng will probably be paid for by the first of the year. Thomasville The trustees make the up- stairs hall available for private parties and club meetings for a nominal maintenance cost fee.
