Ms Rogers said. "She is so highly

to overcome her Initial shyness.

Approydmately 175 indivkluals

Basic Education classes in
Greenbrier County, meeting at
schools in Rupert, Alderson, and
at Greenbrler East High School.
Those who complete course re-
quirements earn their General
Educational Development (GED)
high school diplomas. According
to Mrs Dalton, over 45 per cent
of adults in West Virginia over
the age of 25 do not have high
school diplomas, pointing to a
need for adult education. "Corn-

way in increasing an adult's con-
fidence in himself--and tile per-

from it," she said.
Funding lbr the GED program
comes from the state Board of
Education through the county

In addition to the GED
classes, the county board of edu-

time Classes" to assist adults in
developing and sharpening
work-related skills. Mrs Sims is
currently enrolled in a typing
and accounting class, working
toward a clerical certificate.
Many adults attend the evening
classes after working at their
jobs during the daytime. Instruc-
tional sites are at Greenbrier
West High School at Charrnco,
Lewisburg Junior High School.
and Greenbrier East High
School. Fees for students range
from $37 to $60.
Mrs Sims said she is inter-

to go at this point--I just want to

purchased--and on August 28
the paramedics made their first
call. The service's home base is
the former headquarters of the
Quinwood Volunteer Fire De-
partment next to the post office
tn downtown Quinwood.
Quinwood Ambulance now
makes 150 to 180 calls per
month, according to Mr Davis,
most Involving the transporting
of patients to Humana Hospital-
Greenbrier Valley in Fairlea.
Crews also make occasional in-
ter-hospital trips throughout the
eastern United States.
Four crews normally are on
call 24 hours a day at the
Rainelle Medical Center. The
group serves as the phone serv-
ice for the center after 5 p.m. In
exchange for office, sleeping, and
kitchen facilities, Mr Davis said.
According to emergency medi-
cal technician and office clerk
Peggy Fox, the ambulance serv-
ice is similar to others in relying
heavily on reimbursements from
insurance companies. Additional
monies come from a "subscrip-
tion program" which customers
can join. "We really didn't have
any fund drives," she said.
"We're really too busy to conduct
any."
Mrs Fox has been with the
ambulance service since its be-
ginninl~s and is pleased with its
progress. "Our first priority is
patient care, of course. All our
personnel are professional, with
high standards, frequent train-
ing, and the caring attitude
that's needed to get the job
done."
