Fire Prevention
Is your home a safe haven
from fire? It may not be, if you
haven't gone on a hunt for home
hazards lately. According to Fred
Hedges of the Ronceverte Fire
Department, over 5,000 people
in the United States died in fires
in their homes in 1988 (the lat-
est year for which statistics are
available), and the majority of
those fire deaths could have
been prevented by changing
risky behaviors and, identifying
and removing home fire hazards.
"With about 80 per cent of all
fire deaths m this country occur-
rin~ in our homes, this year's
t:irc Prevention Week message is
right on tile mark," Chief ttodges
says. "The lheine, 'Make Your
Place Firesafe: Hunt for Home
Hazards,' underscores the im-
porianI role we can have in re-
ducing our risk of having a home
lire by pointing out that there
are steps we all can take to
nlake our homes firesafe. The
firsl step is gong on a htmt for
home fire hazards."

Fire of 1871. The Chicago fire
killed 250 people, left 100,000
homeless and destroyed more

Who would have ever thought
the largest herb we know would
be a banana, when bananas are
always considered a fruit. In the
world of plants there are many
categories like annuals, perenni-
als, trees, fruits, shrubs, vines,
ornamentals and vegetables.
Due to many other beneficial
qualities, many of these group-
ings, including fruits like ba-
nanas, have earned tile classifi-
cation of herb. When one of
these categories goes beyond the
norm arid actually provides more
than basic nutrition for our sys-
tems, it will be merited as an
herb.
Banana plants, musa para-
disiaca, sapientum or the dwarf,
musa cavendishii (Musaceae),
look like trees but actually have
no woody trunk or limbs. What
we think of as "tile trunk of the
tree" is actually a series of tong
leafstalks wrapped tightly to-
gether. As with many tropical
plants, each new leaf appears
consecutively on the stalk much
like the wrappings of a cigar. As
the plant continues to grow the
new leaf unrolls, similar to a
huge drooping feather. Each ap-
pearing new leaf COl~tinues to
promote the further height and
style of the banana plant.
Surprisingly enough, and
similar to other |ropical plants,
the roots of banana trees are
perennial. Propagation is easily
made by removing and planting
the sucker plant from the base.
With added knowledge of the
bananas, a tropical plant which
