Usir~g a fabric softener doesn't
have to be risky. You can geI all the
benefits without those stares . . d
you use fabric softeners correctly.
Don't avoid the problem by
scratching fabric softeners off your
!aundly tist. The benefits of fabric
softeners are well established: they
mrpart softness and/or fluffiness to
washable fabrics, they decrease
static cling, make fabrics feel
smooth, impart a pleasing flagrance,
reduce drying time, reduce wrm
kting, and make ironing easier.
When improperly used, however,
this laundry aid can stain fabrics.
Such stains can generally be re-
moved. But by following some basic
procedures, you can prevent the
stains from recurring.
Fabric softener stains can occu,,
m the washer or dryer. Those from
washer-added softeners have a blue
or g~ay color, and they often took
and feel greasy. Stains from dlyer-
added softeners appear as color-
less, oity spots.
Fortunately, both types are rarely
permanent. You can remove tiTem
by simply wetting the stained area
'and rubbing it with bar soap. Rinse
the fabric and launder. Check to be
sure that the stain is removed and, if
it is not, repeat the procedure before
dryer drying. (The heat of the dryer
may set the stain.)
Fabric softener stains generally
are caused by product misuse.
Since products differ, it is important
