A revised bid from Anderson
Paving Company/Mountain Enter-
prises to pave Nicholas Avenue and
Chestnut Street was approved April
23 by the Rainelle Town Council.
Late last year the Council approved
the paving of Chestnut Street only,
but the group voted April 9 to solicit
a new bid from the selected paving
company to include Nicholas Ave-
nue in the proiect. The bid is $8,300.
Work is expected to begin in time
next few days.
In other business, the Council
voted to investigate the amount of
money needed to pave Horton Ave-
nue between Fifth and Sixth streets:
Tile segment of road is 20 feet wide
and 230 feet long.
The Council approved a proposal
by visitor George Brooks to pur-
chase a commode for the City Park,
It will replace one damaged by fro-
zen water last winter, The group
also approved the purchase of a
new head for the park's water foun-
tain. It will replace one damaged by
heavy use or vandalism last year,
Councilman Da?yl Sanford ex-
pressed concern about a hole filled
with stagnant water behind Heart-
land of Rainelle nursing home and
urged that it be filled. Recorder W,
H Johnson agreed to discuss the
matter with the nursing home for a
possible solution.

T-Men After Illegal Woodsmen
Tax Division employees will be
combing state forests to locate log-
ging companies who are not regis-
tered with the Tax Division and are
not paying severance taxes, said
Charles O. Lorensen, Secretary of
the Department of Tax and Reve-
nue.
"In response to numerous com-
plaints concerning out of state log-
gers coming into West Virgini~ and
cutting our trees without paying the
State's severance taxes, the Depart-
ment will launch "Operation Quick
Strike" to identify and audit these
businesses," Mr Lorensen said.
"Recent audits reveal a serious
compliance problem with our sever-
ance tax law. Many timber produc-
ers are cutting timber and not paying
the tax," Mr Lorensen said.
"Operation Quick Strike" is an
audit program instituted by Mr
Lorensen as a part of the Tax
Division's plan to make voluntary
compliance with State tax laws
"easy" while making non-compliance
"costly."
"Quick Strike" recently targeted
medical professionals who were not
paying the State's use tax and the
result was millions of dollars in use
tax collections, according to Mr
Lorensen.
Logging companies are some-
times difficult to locate. They come
into the State, cut our forests and
leave before we are able to identify
them," Mr Lorensen stated, "We are
working with the Department of
Natural Resources but we are also
asking for the public's assistance in
locating these companies. If you
suspect a logging company may not
be in compliance with our tax laws,
contact the Auditing Division of the
Department of Tax and Revenue•
