Little Trees
After three weeks of ordering,
wrapping, and distributing over
15,000 tree seedlings, Greenbrier
Valley National Bank ended its
seedling giveaway April 28.
"We are extremely pleased at
how well the seedling giveaway was
received by the people of the
Greenbrier Valley area," stated
Philip McLaughlin, President of
Greenbrier Valley national Bank.
"With Earth Day celebrations going
on worldwide, it's especially gratify-
ing to see our citizens able to help
make our area even more beautiful
through the planting of the seed-
lings."
The seedling giveaway was part
of a marketing campaign for the
bank and its four offices -- Rainelle,
Rupert, Atderson and Lewisburg --
with the slogan, "Keeping the Valley
Green."
Although most of the trees were
being planted in the Greenbrier Val-
ley, some have been carried to dif-
ferent parts of the state.

Last October when the hurricane
hit my yard, I was watching from my
kitchen window as much amazed as
terrified. In an instant the huge pine
tree by the horse field broke in half
and crashed down, pulling the main
electric cable with it. It was the peak
of the storm and unidentifiable ob-
jects flew past the view of the win-
dow along with my son's yellow
windbreaker, the lid to the barbecue
grill, a frisbee, and a piece of a
cracked flowerpot. The trellised,
arched arbor in the front yard by the
house fell flat on its face. I had
spent the last three years training
the wisteria to grow over it in a
green upside down U. My heart
sank as I watched it fall because I
was counting on some dripping
purple blossoms this spring.
Not that my wisteria has ever
bloomed for the four years we have
lived here. Earlier this past fall my
husband chopped at its roots with
the back of his shovel. He used the
shovel alternately like an ax and
spear as" he attacked. The agricul-
tural extension agent I had called for
advice had recommended this vio-
lent technique as a way to get it to
bloom. Now t had to cut all the vines
way back, disentangle the arbor, re-
set the four metal poles in the
ground, and start all over again.
I cut away all of the vines except
the three main ones. I'd read some-
where earlier that drastic prunning
might encourage flowering as welt.
You see, I can't give up on the wis-
teria although it would be far easier
and al3parently wiser to do so. Not
