(Ephesians Paid for by Olan Morgan One of the criteria in the process of being named a Saint is to perform a canonically approved miracle. Martyrs, those who suffer death rather than renounce their religious principles, can be canonized in the Church's canon of Saints without the act of a miracle. Although the whole process is very involved both in time and effort, no one many even be accepted into the process without the element of joy. All saints, no matter how difficult the trials of their life may have been, must have joy. As said by Bishop F. J. Sheen, "There's never been a saint who was not joyful. Many saints, like Au- gustine, were great sinners, but there are no sad saints." Alda, her name meaning old, rich, wise, was a native of Siena -- a cultural center and city located in the province of Tuscany about forty miles south of Florence, Italy. Born in 1249, she married a native Sienese. After seven years of mar- riage and no children, her husband died. As a widow, she retired to a small cottage on the outskirts of town. She spent her days in prayer and little by little gave away all her possessions. When she was re- duced to a drinking cup made from a gourd she even decided to give up her solitude. Alda began caring for the poor and the sick. Eventually she moved to the hospital at Siena so she could be closer to her patients. The staff members used these special mo- ments to hold her up for ridicule. Desperate to prove her a fake dur- ing these trance-like states they went as far as applying lighted candles to her hands and poking and piercing her with sharp instru- ments. Through continued great humility and kindness Alda administered to the poor and the sick in her care. From her charity many cures are at- tributed to her ministrations. Even the hospital staff grew to respect her for her unfailing joy. Saint Alda died in 1309 at the age of sixty. She is remembered on April 26.
