Funding for the work is from the 4.85-per-cent gasoline tax imple- mented by the state during the Arch Moore administration. "If we can continue at this pace, we should have our small bridge problems taken care of in about ten years," he added "One of the bridges now being replaced is the Little Clear Creek bridge on U. S. 60 between Crawley and Rupert. The 20-foot-wide struc- ture has contributed to a number of accidents throughout the years, ac- cording to State Police officer Les P. Mullens of the Rainelle detachment. "What accounts for a lot of the dan- ger is that there is a passing area on both sides of the bridge, and then a non-passing zone on the bridge it- self. After all the curves on U. S. 60, drivers see this wide-open stretch of road and try to pass, but then some folks slow up at the bridge because it's narrower than others." Sergeant Mullens added, "What's interesting is that the bridge is no narrower than the road--they're Weekly Pepsi Specials case 24 pk cans ..................................... $6.99 6 pk. 16 oz. non-returnables ................. $2.39 Singles .................................................. 49 Check us out for these Pepsi and other products SHANKLAND'S STORE & EXXON Cross The Bridge in Ronceverte and Save 647-5434 YOUR SPECIAL OFFER Est e Lauder SUMMER STOCK An over 75.00 value. A mile-long area at either side of the bridge has been the scene of many accidents, according to Ser- geant Mullens. The Little Clear Creek bridge measures 82 feet long by 20 feet wide. Work is underway to place the existing bridge several feet to the south while a new structure, 30 feet wide, is built on the old site. The project is expected to cost $170,000. Also to be replaced is the Big Clear Creek bridge at Rupert, which is 20 feet wide by 90 feet long. Cost is estimated at $t 80,000. The old bridge is still standing and may be used by motorists until it is closed off by the Highway Department at a date yet to be announced. Motorists may use either the old or new bridge until that time. The new bridge was built at a cost of approximately $100,000, ac- cording to Mr Hayes. It will now has a gravel surface but will be paved this summer. The Kitchen Creek bridge was replaced because of a ten-ton weight restriction, its narrow width, and the sharp curve drivers had to negotiate in approaching it from the south, MrHayes said.
