Austin The Greenbrier East Spartans continued their six-year mastery of the Greenbrier West Cavaliers with their twelfth straight win over the Cave by a 70-56 score January 24. East used a balanced scoring attack to notch their tenth victory in twelve games. Jonn Estep-coached Cavaiier~ pulled to within six points, coming up with several big steals as East went to a delay type offense. Coach Jerry Bradley's crew showed maturity by overcoming the relentless Cavalier pressure to hold on for the 14-point win. Ryan McClung, senior starter, capped the first half scoring with a foul-line jumper at the buzzer to give East a 30-19 lead going into the intermis- sion. The visiting Cavaliers were led by Gary Boone with 19 points. Sopho- more Steve Vaughn was the only other West hoopster with double fig- ures at 12 points. The Cavaliers shot a blistering 88% from the char- ity stripe, drilling 15 of 17 tries. East was better than adequate from the free-throw line, making good on 15 of 23 attempts for a de- cent 65%. East used a tenacious full-court pressure to notch many transition points while the Cavaliers used a patient back- door offense to keep pace with the quicker Spartans. Going into the fi- nal frame, East still enjoyed an eleven-point lead at 47-36. In the frantic final period, the J.= tans are now 10-2 while the Cava- liers fell to 3-7. The Spartans travelled 'io Oak Hill to take on the Coalfield Confer- ence leading Red Devils January 26.
